Gas Log Installation
Gas logs put a flame in an existing fireplace without the wood, ash and sweeping. Done properly, they depend on the right kind of set, the right gas connection and a flue that is set up for them.
What gas logs are
A gas log set is a burner with ceramic or refractory logs, installed in an existing wood-burning fireplace. It runs on natural gas or propane. It looks like a wood fire, but it does not need kindling, and it leaves no ash.
Vented and vent-free
| Type | What to know |
|---|---|
| Vented | Burns with the flue open and sends the exhaust up the chimney. The flame is larger and more realistic. It needs a working chimney. |
| Vent-free | Designed to burn with little exhaust released into the room. Rules on their use vary by place, and not all fireplaces are suitable. |
Which one is right depends on your fireplace, local rules and what you want from it. We explain what is permitted and practical for your house before you choose.
What the chimney has to do
- A vented set needs a sound, clear flue to carry the exhaust away
- The damper has to be set the way the manufacturer requires, which often means fixed open
- Gas exhaust is cooler and wetter than wood smoke, which can damage a masonry flue over time
- Some installations call for a liner or other flue work
What installation involves
We inspect the fireplace and the flue, install the burner and logs according to the manufacturer’s instructions and connect the gas supply. Gas connections and permits are governed by local codes, and we tell you what applies to your project before work begins. See also gas fireplace service and gas fireplace replacement.
If you smell gas, do not operate any switch or flame. Leave, and call your gas utility or 911.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I put gas logs in my wood-burning fireplace?
Often yes, depending on the fireplace, the venting and local rules. We check first.
Do gas logs need a chimney inspection?
A vented set uses the chimney, so the flue should be sound. See gas fireplace service.
Are gas logs cleaner than wood?
They leave no ash and burn without creosote, but the flue and the burner still need to be checked.
Can I burn wood in it later?
Not safely with the gas set in place. Removing the set is a separate job.
