Chimney Caps in New Jersey
A chimney cap covers the top of the flue to keep rain, debris and animals out. It is a small part that prevents a long list of problems.
What a chimney cap is
A chimney cap is a metal cover that sits over the flue opening. Most have a solid top to shed rain and mesh around the sides so smoke can escape while keeping out birds, squirrels and larger debris. A cap is not the same as the crown, which is the slab around the flue, or a chase cover, which covers the top of a framed chimney enclosure.
Signs you need a cap, or a new one
- There is no cap on the flue at all
- The cap is rusted, bent, loose or missing
- Rain gets into the fireplace
- Rust stains in the firebox or on the damper
- Noises, nests or an animal in the chimney
- Leaves and debris collect in the flue
Why a cap matters
An open flue lets rain run straight down. That can rust the damper and firebox, stain the masonry and shorten the life of the flue liner. It also gives animals an easy way in. A cap solves these at a low cost compared with the damage it prevents.
Choosing a cap
| Consideration | What to know |
|---|---|
| Flue size and type | The cap has to fit the flue tile or the pipe, and a multi-flue chimney may need a cap that covers several flues |
| Mounting | Some caps clamp to the flue tile, and others mount on the crown |
| Material | Stainless steel, galvanized steel, copper and aluminum are common, and they differ in cost and in how long they last |
| Mesh | The opening size affects how well it blocks debris and animals, and appliance or fuel requirements can limit what is appropriate |
| Appearance | Caps are visible from the ground, so style and finish matter to many homeowners |
Because the right cap depends on the flue and the appliance connected to it, we confirm the size and fit before recommending one.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Does every chimney need a cap?
A cap is strongly recommended. Without one, rain, debris and animals can get into the flue.
Is a cap the same as a spark arrestor?
The mesh on many caps works as a spark arrestor, but not every cap does. Appliance and local requirements can specify mesh size, so we confirm what suits your chimney.
Can I install a cap myself?
Fitting the cap correctly and working on a roof are the hard parts. A cap that does not fit the flue or is not secured can blow off.
My cap is rusted. Should it be replaced?
Surface rust is common. If the metal is corroded through, loose or damaged, replacing it is usually the better choice.
