Fireplace and smoke problems

The smoke chamber, explained

It sits between the damper and the flue, you will probably never see it, and it affects how well your fireplace draws.

Short answer. The smoke chamber sits between the damper and the flue and narrows to funnel smoke upward. A smooth, sound chamber helps smoke leave. A rough or cracked one disturbs the draft and can leak. Parging smooths and seals it.

What it is

The firebox is wide and the flue is narrow. The smoke chamber is the tapered space between them. In many older fireplaces it is built of stepped brick, which leaves a rough, uneven surface.

What goes wrong

  • Rough surfaces. Uneven brick disturbs the airflow.
  • Open mortar joints. Gaps can let gases pass where they should not.
  • Cracked parging. The coating applied to smooth the chamber can crack with age.
  • Soot and water damage. Moisture from above and deposits from below break the surfaces down.

How to tell

The chamber is checked from below with a light and mirror, or with a camera. CSIA inspection checklists include checking that the walls are parged smooth. Signs at home include smoke spilling into the room and soot staining above the fireplace opening. A flashlight and a mirror held above the damper will show some of it.

Repair: parging

Parging is a coating of masonry material applied to smooth and seal the chamber walls. It is a standard repair for rough chambers. It is specialist work in a confined space, done from the firebox. See smoke chamber parging.

Common misconceptions

"Parging fixes every smoke problem." It fixes a rough or cracked chamber. Smoke has other possible causes; see why is smoke coming into my house?.

"If I cannot see it, it cannot be damaged." Its condition is an inspection point for exactly that reason.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I check the smoke chamber myself?

Partly, with a light and a mirror. A proper look takes tools and experience.

Is the smoke chamber part of the flue?

No. It sits below the flue, above the damper.

Does every fireplace have one?

Masonry fireplaces do. Factory-built units are built differently.

How long does parging take?

That depends on the extent. Ask when you book.
