Wood Stove Service in New Jersey
A wood stove puts more heat into a smaller flue than an open fireplace, which makes the chimney and connector pipe work harder. Service keeps the whole system clean, sound and safe.
The stove and the chimney are one system
A wood stove is connected to a chimney by a connector pipe. The stove burns hot, the exhaust cools as it travels through the pipe and the flue, and the deposits that settle in them are what make wood stoves a common source of chimney fires. Caring for a stove means caring for the stove, the pipe and the flue together.
What we do

How often
How often a stove needs cleaning depends on how much it is used, what is burned and how it is run. Stoves that are used as a main heat source for the season can need cleaning more than once. NFPA 211 calls for yearly inspection. We explain what your own system needs after we have seen it.
Signs your stove needs attention
- Smoke leaking at the door, joints or connector
- Heavy soot or glazing on the glass or inside the stove
- A flaky, shiny or tar-like coating in the pipe
- The stove burns poorly, smokes on loading or draws weakly
- Rust, warping or cracks in the stove or pipe
- The stove was installed by someone else and has never been checked
Dry, seasoned wood and a hot enough fire do more to keep a stove and chimney clean than any amount of cleaning. See our guide on firewood.
