Liners and flues

Wood stove or insert: why the liner matters

Adding a stove or insert to an existing fireplace changes what the chimney has to do.

Short answer. An insert or stove exhausts through a much smaller path than an open fireplace. An old, oversized flue can cool the smoke too fast, build more deposit and draw poorly. A liner sized to the appliance and installed according to its instructions is usually part of the installation.

What changes

An open fireplace needs a large flue to carry a lot of air and smoke. A stove or insert burns more efficiently and exhausts far less. Without a liner, that small flow of smoke has a large cold chimney to travel through.

What can go wrong without one

IssueWhy
Heavy creosote buildupSmoke cools in an oversized flue and condenses
Poor draftThe flue is the wrong size for the appliance
Smoke leaksDamaged tile or open joints in an old flue
Voided instructionsMany appliance makers specify a liner

What to check before installing

  • The appliance manufacturer instructions for venting.
  • The condition of the existing flue, ideally by inspection of the flue interior.
  • That the liner is sized for the appliance. See Chimney liner sizing basics.

Keeping it clean

Stoves and inserts have their own sweeping needs. Ask the installer how often and how it should be done. See How often should a chimney be swept?.

What to confirm

  • What appliance is it and what does the maker require?
  • Is the existing flue suitable or does it need relining?
  • Is the new liner sized to the appliance?
  • Is the connection to the appliance complete?

Common misconceptions

"The old fireplace flue is fine for a new stove." It often is not suited without checking.
