Fireplace and Chimney Repair in North Bergen, NJ
North Bergen is mostly multi-unit housing. We repaired a flue, added a cap damper and fixed the smoke chamber and firebox cracks at one home here.
Dr. Sweeper has completed a chimney and fireplace project in North Bergen, Hudson County. It combined HeatShield flue repair, a cap damper, smoke chamber work and repair of fireplace cracks with fire-rated material. You can see it below and on its own project page.
Only about 18% of North Bergen's homes are detached houses, and the ACS finds that about 77% of units are in buildings with two or more units. Chimneys in buildings with several units may serve more than one household, where responsibility for repairs can be shared.
The job covered several parts of one system, from the top of the flue to the firebox. That is typical of how fireplace problems show up: more than one thing needs attention at once.

What the housing mix means in North Bergen
Most units are in multi-unit buildings, so a chimney may serve an apartment or a two-family home. Where several households share one, the first practical question is who decides on repairs and who pays. Settle that before a contractor is booked.
What we look at
The parts our project touched
Flue
Repaired with the HeatShield system, which is applied to the existing flue instead of replacing it.
Cap damper
A damper at the top of the chimney that seals the flue when closed.
Smoke chamber
The sloped area above the firebox where smoke is funneled into the flue.
Fireplace cracks
Repaired with fire-rated material so the firebox can be used again.
Learn
Repairing a flue without relining it
A damaged flue does not always mean a new liner. HeatShield is a flue-repair system applied to the existing flue to restore a continuous surface. It is a possible option when the flue is cracked or has lost mortar between tiles but the structure is otherwise sound. Relining with a stainless steel liner is the alternative, and it is the usual choice when the flue is badly damaged or the appliance needs a different size.
Which one is appropriate comes from the inspection, not from the brand. See our HeatShield flue repair page for how it works, do you need a chimney liner? for the decision, and the North Bergen project for the actual job.
