Chimney Damper Replacement
When a damper is warped, rusted through or no longer fits its frame, replacing it is better than patching it again. A new damper restores the seal and the control over your draft.
When replacement makes sense
- The plate is warped, cracked or rusted through
- The frame is damaged and the plate no longer seats
- Parts are missing and cannot be matched
- Repairs have been tried and keep failing
- You are losing heat and air up the flue and want a better seal
Your options
| Option | What it is |
|---|---|
| Replacement throat damper | A new damper that goes in the throat of the fireplace, just above the firebox, in place of the old one. |
| Top-sealing damper | A damper mounted at the top of the flue, with a gasket seal, operated by a cable from the fireplace. See top-sealing damper installation. |
The choice depends on the condition of the fireplace and flue, the size of the opening and how you use it. A throat damper replacement keeps things familiar. A top-sealing damper usually seals better and also covers the top of the flue.
What the work involves
We measure the throat, remove the old damper and fit a new one that suits the opening. It has to fit the existing masonry and move freely. If the smoke chamber or firebox shows damage while the damper is out, we tell you, so you can decide about those at the same time.
Before choosing, tell us what bothers you most: drafts, rust, water or a damper that will not work. It helps us recommend the right one.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is a replacement damper the same size as the old one?
It has to fit the opening. We measure before ordering.
Can I keep my damper and just add a cap?
If the damper works and seals, yes. If it does not, a cap alone will not fix it.
Which is better, a throat damper or a top-sealing one?
Neither is better for every house. See our page on dampers and tell us how you use the fireplace.
Will a new damper stop drafts?
A well-fitting damper that closes tightly reduces them. A top-sealing damper tends to do it best.
