HeatShield Flue Repair in New Jersey

Flue resurfacing repairs a cracked or worn flue from the inside, without taking the chimney apart. It is one of the options when a flue is damaged but still basically sound.

What flue resurfacing is

Resurfacing means applying a heat-resistant, cement-based material to the inside of the flue to seal cracks and open joints and restore a smooth, continuous surface. It repairs the existing flue, where a new liner replaces it.

HeatShield is one product system used for this kind of repair. Whether it is suitable for your chimney depends on the flue, its condition and the appliance that uses it.

When it is a candidate

  • A clay tile flue with cracked tiles or open joints but a flue that is still basically in line
  • Deterioration found at inspection, such as gaps in mortar between tiles
  • Damage that has not broken the flue apart
  • A chimney where taking down masonry to reline would be disruptive

When it is not

  • The flue is collapsed, badly displaced, or missing sections
  • The flue is the wrong size for the appliance
  • Damage is too extensive for a surface repair
  • The appliance or its manufacturer requires a different kind of liner

If resurfacing is not appropriate, we say so and explain what we would recommend instead, which is usually a new liner.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is HeatShield?

It is a product system for resurfacing the inside of a flue. We describe resurfacing in general terms here, and the specifics of the system suit some chimneys and not others.

Is resurfacing a replacement for a liner?

No. It repairs the existing flue. If the flue is badly damaged, or the wrong size, a new liner is more appropriate.

How do I know if my flue can be resurfaced?

A close look at the flue shows its condition and whether a resurfacing repair is realistic. Appliance requirements also matter.

Does it work for all fuels?

It depends on the appliance and the product requirements. We confirm what suits your setup before recommending anything.
