Chimney Stucco Repair in New Jersey
Stucco-covered chimneys hide what is underneath. Cracks, hollow spots and stains usually mean water is getting behind the stucco. We find the source, then repair the stucco to match.
How stucco chimneys work
Stucco is a cement-based coating. On a chimney it may be applied over masonry or over metal lath on a framed chase. Either way, it is a skin that keeps water out. When the skin cracks or loses its bond, water gets behind it and the damage grows out of sight.
Signs of stucco trouble
- Cracks, especially wide ones or ones that run in a pattern
- Hollow sound when you tap the surface
- Bulging, bubbling or flaking patches
- Stains or streaks that return after cleaning
- Pieces that have fallen off, exposing lath or masonry
- Water stains inside the house near the chimney
Why stucco chimneys crack
Stucco moves with temperature, and chimneys are exposed on every side. Cracks start from movement and from freezing and thawing. The bigger issue is where the water comes from. A failed crown, loose flashing or a missing cap can send water down the face of the chimney, and the stucco takes the damage.
Fix the water source first
Patching stucco without stopping the water usually means the patch fails. We look at the crown, cap, flashing and any joints in the stucco, and explain what is causing the damage before recommending a repair.
Repair options
| Condition | Typical repair |
|---|---|
| Fine surface cracks | Cleaning and sealing with a flexible product, or patching |
| Hollow or loose areas | Removing the loose stucco, checking what is behind it, and re-applying matching layers |
| Damaged lath or wet substrate | Repairing or replacing the lath or backing before re-stuccoing |
| Widespread failure | Re-stuccoing a larger area or the whole chimney |
Matching the finish
A repair that does not match shows. We match the texture and discuss color, and where an entire face needs painting to blend in, we tell you so.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is a crack in chimney stucco a problem?
A fine crack may be cosmetic. Wide cracks, cracks that keep growing, or hollow areas mean water can get behind the stucco and should be checked.
Can stucco be patched, or does it need to be redone?
Small areas can usually be patched. If damage is widespread, or the lath or wall behind is wet or damaged, a larger repair is more sensible.
Will new stucco match the old?
We match the texture and talk through color. Older stucco has weathered, so some blending or painting may be needed to make a repair disappear.
How can I tell if water is getting behind my stucco?
Hollow sounds, bulges, stains and interior water marks are the common signs. An inspection of the chimney top and the stucco together is the best way to know.
